Fetuppdateringen Spotify 0.4.3 har börjat rulla ut till användarna och förutom sköna nyheter som att programmet nu är betydligt mer socialt med funktioner som Facebookintegrering, profilsida du kan göra publik och dela med andra (exempel), möjlighet att se vad dina vänner lyssnar på och en inbox för tips om musik från vänner m.m så har den en ofta påtalad feature; stöd för lokala mp3filer.

Jag tycker mig ha väntat hur länge som helst på en möjlighet att kunna komplettera Spotifybiblioteket med egen musik, men nu när det äntligen går slår det mig hur sällan jag öppnar min gamla mp3mapp. Mina mp3:r verkar har gått samma öde till mötes som min gamla CD-samling – en enorm mängd skivor jag aldrig rör för att – i stort sett allt – redan finns tillgängligt.

Så, Warner vill nu fokusera på tjänster som kräver betalning av lyssnarna istället för att få in pengarna bakvägen via reklam. Det slog mig då att jag inte sett något på länge om Spotifys ersättningsnivåer till skivbolagen och artisterna. En artikel på SvD från november förra året visar att den mest spelade låten under tjänstens fem första månader var Lady Gagas “Pokerface”. För den bedriften fick hon hela 2300 kr av STIM. Hoho. Eller ja, nu skrev hon olyckligtvis inte låten själv så RedOne snappar åt sig hälften av den kakan.

Så, fem månader gav henne hela 1150 kronor. Det blir nog inte många kilo glamourglitter inköpt för det. Det ska bli intressant att se hur allt fortskrider, för hittills har det ju visat sig rätt svårt för artister och skivbolag att kritisera Spotify utan att bli uthängda som teknikfientliga och bakåtsträvande idioter.

If you’re a Last.fm and Spotify user I seriously recommend checking out the mashup “Last.fm + Spotify + Find New Albums” by Vilhelm K. Vardøy. Just feed it with your Last.fm username and it’ll continuously wade through all the new music added to the Spotify library and match it against your top 50 artists from Last.fm. The result is a RSS feed of new music available on Spotify you most likely want to know about. Simple, elegant and highly usable.

(Btw, you do know you can scrobble to Last.fm using Spotify right? Just add your Last.fm username and password to the Last.fm box in Spotify’s preferences)

A group of Swedish and anonymous “computer science researchers and geeks” has posted the (open) source code to a free Spotify client dubbed Despotify. So far it’s just proof-of-concept and sports a simple text based interface, but something tells me it won’t take long until that changes. To still support Spotify as far as possible you need a premium account to use the player, so no – it’s not just a cheap attempt at getting rid of the ads without paying for it (there’s no Geographic Rights Management though).

“We have not implemented support for ads since its pointless in an open source client. Patching away the ad-routine is just too simple. We strongly believe that you should pay for the premium service if you want to use the open source client. “

Here’s a video of the rumored Spotify iPhone app, and I really like the look of it. Over-the-air streaming of Spotify’s entire library along with the possibility to cache playlists when you’re in wi-fi areas so you can listen later. According to Tech Digest it’ll be for Premium users only though.

I’ve got a hard time imagining that Apple will let this app hit iTunes store though, considering that they never allow apps that compete with their own software, but apparently there’s a Symbian (and most probably Android) version coming as well so let’s just wait and see.
